Germany’s festival calendar is one of the most varied in Europe. From Oktoberfest to the Berlinale to Cologne’s Karneval, these events each offer something distinct — and all are worth experiencing at least once.

Oktoberfest (Munich)

Oktoberfest in Munich is the world's largest beer festival. It runs for 16 to 18 days, starting in late September and ending in the first weekend of October.

Huge beer tents, live music, and traditional Bavarian food fill the grounds for the entire run. Wearing lederhosen or a dirndl is entirely optional but widely encouraged.

Karneval (Cologne)

Karneval in Cologne is known as the "fifth season" and kicks off with the Weiberfastnacht event before building to the main weekend parade.

Revellers in elaborate costumes fill the streets for days of music, floats, and dancing. It's one of Germany's most participatory festivals — bystanders rarely stay bystanders for long.

Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale)

The Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, takes place every February. It's one of the world's leading film festivals.

You can expect to see films from all over the globe, showcasing both well-known and emerging filmmakers.

The red carpet draws major film industry names, but public screenings mean ordinary visitors can attend too.

Berlinale is a good excuse to spend time in Berlin in February, when the city’s cultural life is at its most concentrated.
